Free Chinese and English Classes for Beijing kids donated by China Trade Commission

Foreign and Chinese children now can learn to communicate with each other for free with a new cross-cultural program sponsored by the CTC. Program teaches both foreign languages and cultures to children ages 4 to 8 years of age.

Beijing - Today Lloyd Southworth, the CTC's Director of Community Affairs announced that the China Trade Commission has donated $2 Million USD to teach local Beijing kids how to speak and understand English and newly arrived foreign children how to speak Chinese. The new cross-cultural program expects to benefit 5,000 Beijing residents over the the next year and will be offered in the Haidian District, also known as Beijing's "University District" where over 3 million university students attend more than 150 Chinese universities. The eight week class will be taught by third and fourth year university sudents who major in language studies or linguistics. " We are seeking the cooperation of BFSU, Renmin, Tsinghua, and Peking Universities for the program which is due to start on May 1st." explained Southworth.

The Executive Director of the China Trade Commission, Anthony DeMarco explained the need for new program..."Every day 800 new foreigners are arriving in Beijing to do business. We are witnessing China's gold rush as everyone is flocking here to cash in on the economic boom of China. Unfortunately they come here expecting to do business the western way, and in English. They are shocked when they learn how the Chinese do business, and without some basic understanding of the Chinese culture and language, their ventures are doomed. Likewise, they bring their families and children who want to make new friends at school and on the playground, and without some elementary communication skills, they too will quickly become frustrated. We hope to prepare both the Chinese and the western kids what to expect from and how to better understand their new international friends".

In reality, and according to CTC research, more than 60% of all foreign entrepreneurs who come to China, leave within a year out of frustration in understanding and coping with the Chinese business culture. "Those that remain and adapt usually are quite happy with the new China frontier, but their families still face a social challenge - especially the kids" added Southworth. Each class will provide 60 minutes of language training and 30 minutes of culture training.

The eight week course will have weekly 90 minute classes using bi-lingual teachers hat rely on video presentation with a follow-up of role play for the students. Some local Beijing Drama schools like Drama Rainbow have already offered to help with the program and have donated classroom facilities. Parents interested in enrolling their children for the classes should contact Jason Boyd or Kathy Simmons at the China Trade Commission at 10-8261-5180 or at PromoReservations at G mail dot com, with the name and date of birth if their child. This program will be provided free of charge but offered based on a first-come basis for the first 5,000 children that enroll. Both weeknight and weekend classes will be offered.
