Medgar Evers College Announces Ninth Annual Legacy Awards Gala and Dinner

Announcing the Ninth Annual Legacy Awards Gala and Dinner at Medgar Evers College, CUNY on Thursday, October 8, 2009.

Medgar Evers College of The City University of New York shall celebrate its Ninth Annual Legacy Awards Gala and Dinner on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 at the Marriott Hotel at the Brooklyn Bridge.

The yearly black-tie affair serves as the principal fundraising event for the Medgar Evers College Educational Foundation - raising millions of dollars from corporate gifts, community supporters, and individual pledges over the years. The Gala recognizes individuals- community leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, pioneers ? who have made enormous contributions to society in their fields of endeavor. This year?s honorees, embodying the ?Living Legends? theme, include Basil A. Paterson, Esq., Member, Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C.; Jim Clifton, Chairman & CEO, Gallup, Inc.; Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Founder & Leader, Love Fellowship Tabernacle; Valerie Oliver Durrah, President & CEO, The Neighborhood Technical Assistance Clinic; and William J. Snipes, Esq., Partner, Sullivan & Cromwell, LLP.

"Medgar Evers College has provided great educational opportunities for students in Central Brooklyn who may not have had a chance otherwise for forty years," said Dr. William L. Pollard, College President and Gala host. "This event provides another opportunity for the college to cultivate and enlighten its friends on the role the College can play in the lives of present and future scholars."

Award-winning anchor Maurice DuBois of ?CBS 2 News This Morning? and Angela McGlown, best-selling author and political news analyst, shall be the master and mistress of ceremonies for the night?s festivities.

The event co-sponsors are Moet Hennessy USA, Con Edison, Macy's, and National Grid. The honorary co- chairs are Myrlie Evers-Williams, The Honorable Marty Markowitz, Iyanla Vanzant and Reena Evers-Everett. The dinner co-chairs include Mr. Noel Hankin, Moet Hennessy USA; Joe Chan, President, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership; and Bob Catell, Executive Director & Deputy Chairman of National Grid.

Medgar Evers College was founded in 1969 through the efforts from educators and community leaders in central Brooklyn. The College is named after Medgar Wiley Evers, a Mississippi-born black civil rights activist who was assassinated on June 12, 1963. The College is divided into four schools: The School of Business; The School of Professional and Community Development; The School of Liberal Arts and Education; and The School of Science, Health, and Technology. Through these Schools, the College offers 29 associate and baccalaureate degree programs, as well as certificate programs in fields such as English, Nursing, and Accounting. Medgar Evers College also operates several co-curricular and external programs and associated centers such as the Male Development and Empowerment Center, the Center for Women?s Development, the Center for Black Literature, and The DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy.
