North Carolina Company Helping Churches Go Green

Churches in North Carolina are receiving some overdue attention as a local Solar installation company directs its focus their way.

A new North Carolina based company is taking an innovative approach in getting communities to become more environmentally friendly by helping churches to install solar panels with the help of parishioners. The solar industry has grown rapidly over the past two years within North Carolina but the majority of that growth has been in the business sector due to the fact that most of the available incentives are geared towards the commercial and industrial sector. Raleigh N.C. based Shannons's Green hopes to change that statistic by assisting churches to install the solar panels while working the congregation on the installation process.

According to Shannon's Green founder, Jody Bowen, "our ultimate goal is to get the parishoners involved in the process so that it gives them a chance to ask questions and get a better understanding on the real benefits of solar power, envirmontally and economically". Mr. Bowen went on to say "the religious community has been largely ignored by the solar industry because the current state and federal incentives are geared towards commercial enterprises". Although there has been considerable advancement over the past two years in renewable energy policies, the non-profit sector has seen little in the way of incentives. Environmental advocates are pushing Congress for greater incentives for non-profits in the upcoming Clean Energy Bill debate. However, it remains to be seen what the final shape of any new energy legislation will look like at this time.

Even though the incentives may not be as lucrative for non-profits as the commercial sector, Mr. Bowen says that "the church is the ideal place to plant the seeds of renewable, solar energy because environmental stewardship is spoken of throughout the Bible. Throughout history the church has played an integral role within the community and if we want to see solar become mainstream it has to start at the community level. It only seems logical that the church should play a leading role in advocating solar energy and more broadly, environmental stewardship."

In November of 2008, the Vatican unveiled that the roof of "Nervi Hall" had been covered with 2400 solar panels. The Vatican newspaper, The Holy See, reported that the Vatican planned to install enough renewable energy sources to provide 20 percent of its needs by 2020. Shannon's Green hopes to tap into this new movement by marketing to churches within central North Carolina. Already, states such as California and New Jersey are seeing an increase in the sales of solar panels to religious organizations.
