Andy Ivey has formally kicked off his campaign to represent District 14 on the Dallas City Council. Mr. Ivey marked the launch of his campaign with the release of Dallas 2007: An Issues Primer. This 88-page book provides unprecedented insight into the issues facing Dallas. Mr. Ivey is also committed to an ambitious door-to-door drive as well as meetings with business and community leaders. Mr. Ivey identifies himself as the ?Pro-Growth Candidate? and is dedicated to promoting fiscal responsibility and limiting the expansion of local government.

A community leader and businessman, Mr. Ivey has the experience needed to represent both businesses and neighborhoods. His commitment to a strong community is demonstrated by recent leadership positions with the Dallas Homeowners League (Secretary, Board of Directors), Groundwork Dallas (Board of Directors), and Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Association (Crime Watch Committee Chair). He has also been active with the Church of the Incarnation (Welcome Minister), Texas Floodplain Management Association (Legislative Committee), and Texas Rail Advocates (Contributing Member). Mr. Ivey has been regularly involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers (Affiliate Member), Friends of Tietze Park Foundation (Volunteer), and Greater Dallas Pachyderms (Member). Specific volunteer activities include the American Planning Association (2005 Texas Annual Conference), Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce (2005 Freedom Run), For the Love of the Lake (Bi-monthly Lakeshore Cleanups), Salvation Army (Volunteer, Carr P. Collins Center), and Water Environment Association of Texas (2006 WEFTEC Volunteer).

Mr. Ivey points out that the biggest issue facing this community is crime. He states, ?It is time to make tough decisions and take the risks necessary to properly support our police and protect our citizens. Local police continue to suffer from staff shortages despite repeated campaign promises from elected officials.? Mr. Ivey completed a ride-along with a uniformed officer in October and is a recent graduate of the Dallas Police Department?s Citizens Police Academy. As the chairperson of his neighborhood crime watch, he believes that strong community support for the DPD is a necessary building block for a successful city.

Addressing business concerns, Mr. Ivey states, "I prefer to attack the underlying problem as opposed to patching over it with a short-term fix. Local government should take a hands-off, pro-business approach to business and economic development. Too often, we sacrifice the long-term health of existing businesses by ignoring limitations to the overall attractiveness of our region. It is time to introduce fiscal responsibility and limited government as the recipe for growth."

Mr. Ivey was the lone voice calling for the industry proven principles of free market economics to be applied to long-term planning in Dallas. In March 2006, the Dallas Business Journal published Mr. Ivey?s review of the Dallas Comprehensive Plan that detailed his commitment to applying sound economic thinking to local issues. In September 2005, his transportation recommendation to DART, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the City of Dallas was so well received that KXAS-Channel 5 News ran a feature story on the issue for three newscasts. This proposal to relieve congestion in Lower Greenville came one year before that area?s parking concerns made headlines. In December 2005, Advocate Magazine published Mr. Ivey?s response to the looming water shortage. This timely article appeared before a severe drought forced water restrictions on the region.

Mr. Ivey lives in the District, works near the District, and has listened to his neighbors as they enjoy the area, but struggle with a city government that seldom meets their needs. Mr. Ivey was born in Dallas and away only during high school and college years. This is home and where he plans to raise his family while serving his community. Mr. Ivey notes, "Dallas District 14 is a unique treasure where a mixture of historic and modern neighborhoods blend together making a unique lifestyle. We have problems, but they can be clearly defined and solved by a dedicated councilmember that will listen to all citizens, work through the framework of government, and implement positive actions. Safety of citizens, homes, and workplaces is a top priority.?

The May 2007 election will decide the District 14 seat on the Dallas City Council. The voters must decide between a candidate that is planning for Dallas? future or maintaining the status quo. ?Since the formation of the district, every councilmember has selected their successor. The voters have an opportunity to reverse this trend and elect someone with fresh ideas. I am ready to lead and promise to bring new ideas that will focus on the future while addressing the concerns of all citizens.?

Dallas is at a crossroads. Sound leadership can reinforce international recognition, create a sound business atmosphere, bring comfort, and security. The citizens of Dallas deserve a safe place to live, work, and raise a family. As a city councilmember, Mr. Ivey's leadership will be vital to meeting the needs, hopes, and desires of the District's' residents.
