Balanced Engineering Solution For The Planet

Systems Engineering, a profession generally associated with putting satellites into space, or creating the newest car models, will look toward the themes of water management, climate change, and transportation during the upcoming international symposium.

From the 15th until 19th of June 2008, the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) will organise the 18th Annual INCOSE International Symposium (IS2008) in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The theme of IS2008 is ?Systems Engineering for the Planet?, addressing the expanding scope of engineering application and responsibility.

Beside the paper tracks and panels discussions as an example of this expanding scope are addressed in specific sub-themes that focus on the application of engineering in complex consumer and industrial systems, transportation, water management and embedded systems. These special tracks include specific paper presentations, an off-site tour and a concluding panel discussion.

Gerald E. Galloway, Jr., P.E., Ph.D., will present a paper during the water management theme track with the title ?Large Scale Water System Engineering in the US: Successes and Challenges? and chair the panel discussion. He is Glenn L Martin Institute Professor of Engineering at the University of Maryland and has served as a Presidential appointee to the Mississippi River Commission and the American Heritage Rivers Advisory Committee and as Secretary of the U.S.

Section of the Canada-U.S. International Joint Commission. In 1994, he was assigned to the White House to lead a committee in assessing the causes of the 1993 Mississippi River Flood. In 2002 and 2005, he served as General Chairman of the American Water Resources Association National Water Policy Dialogues. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Furthermore the presentations given are from experts joining from Europe, America, Asia and Australia. The paper presentation will cover the innovation in architecture, risk and requirement management, process improvement, cost and value engineering of electric, electronic, aerospace and defence and other well known sectors. The program attracts professionals, researchers and educators from industry, government and academia. During the event tool developer and universities can be visited in the exhibition hall.

Dr. Shun-Jie Ji from the Tamkang University in Taiwan and Ana Quiros from Eco Gobal in Costa Rica are two out of four keynote speakers during the symposium.

Dr. Shun-Jie Ji will deliver a speech about ?The Future of Technology and Humanity: Exploring Vision and Action?. He is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Institute of Futures Studies at Tamkang University. He received his Doctoral degree at Michigan State University in Political Science-Urban Studies joint programs.

Dr. Ji is one of the founding board members and the Deputy Secretary General of the Taiwan International Studies Association (TISA). He served as full-time Counselor in Office of the Vice President of Taiwan in 2006. Internationally, he has been working on issues in human rights, human security, multiculturalism, and sustainable development.

Ana Quiros will speak about ?Using Life Cycle Thinking to Disseminate Life-Cycle Management (LCM)?. On 1997 Ms. Quir?s founded ECO GLOBAL, a totally independent, private consulting firm dedicated to assist the private and government sector in Costa Rica on sustainable development. Ms.

Quiros is member of the board of directors of several organizations, lecturer, author, and collaborates with the UN and other organizations giving seminars on Commerce, Environment and Social Responsibility. She was the first representative and Head of Delegation for Costa Rica at the ISO, actively participating in the EcoLabeling and Life Cycle Subcommittees, the Climate Change and the Developing Countries Working Groups. She holds a Masters in Science and Engineering from Stanford University, California, and Civil Engineering from the University of Costa Rica.
