ACRI-ST Shines With GlobCOLOUR Project At Oceanology 2008

ACRI-ST of France, the company leading the GlobCOLOUR project launched by the European Space Agency, will be exhibiting its know-how at the Oceanology International 2008 trade show in London in mid-March. The Europe-wide project centres on the supply of space-imaging data about the colour of the oceans. This data aims to support research on the carbon cycle and operational oceanography.

ACRI-ST of France, the company leading and co-ordinating the GlobCOLOUR project launched by the European Space Agency, will be exhibiting its know-how at the Oceanology International 2008 trade show in London in mid-March. The Europe-wide project centres on the supply of space-imaging data about the colour of the oceans. This data aims to support research on the carbon cycle and operational oceanography.

Visitors will be able to meet representatives from ACRI-ST at the Oceanology International trade show in March of this year.

The GlobCOLOUR project, launched by the European Space Agency (ESA), consists in setting up and operating a ?water colour? data processing and distribution platform based on the exploitation of multiple sensors (SeaSTAR/SeaWiFS, AQUA/MODIS, ENVISAT/MERIS and PARASOL/POLDER) on a worldwide scale.

The data that is used is provided by space imaging. The ?water colour? data gathered by the sensors covers chlorophyll concentration; marine luminance; the diffuse attenuation coefficient; dissolved organic and detritus matter; matter in suspension; the particulate back-scattering coefficient; the turbidity index; the cloud cover fraction; and, finally, the quality indicator.

Three departments collaborate closely in the exploitation of this data: the data-processing department itself; the team dealing with the distribution and downstream exploitation of the data; and the scientific-monitoring and expertise unit.

The final objective of the services offered by GlobCOLOUR is to cover the processing of the space data, its merging, the provision of the data, and its archiving for statistical processing purposes (so that the analysis of climatic trends and the detection of anomalies may lead to an alert). This type of service tends to be integrated into the world of operational surveillance, due in particular to new European regulations in this field.

Clients of ACRI-ST are companies and institutions in the environmental and defence industries, regional authorities, scientists themselves, and also players in aquaculture and tourism (in connection with the issue of the quality of bathing water).

From an end-purposes viewpoint ? and apart from the scientific interest of a continuous observation of the marine environment itself ? this platform will further the elaboration and validation of new products derived from the colour of water, as well as the improvement of data-merging techniques. Besides, the exploitation of the platform as a permanent observatory will enable the operators to qualify the data collected (in terms of quality, variability and relevance of the information that is collated).

About ACRI-ST

ACRI-ST is an R&D company based in the Sophia-Antipolis technology park, near Nice, in south-eastern France. It consists of a team of engineers and researchers specialising in the fields of applied mathematics, geophysics, mechanics and numerical modelling. The company carries out studies, provides expertise, runs training courses and supplies environmental information services.

ACRI-ST will be presenting its unique know-how at Oceanology International 2008, the trade show to be held in London (at ExCel, in Docklands) between 11 and 13 March 2008. BMTI will have a stand on the French national pavilion, which will be a UBIFRANCE pavilion.

UBIFRANCE is the French export-support agency, and the French Technology Press Bureau (FTPB) is the London press bureau of UBIFRANCE.
