Dr Tariq Drabu Talks an About Oral Bacteria Which is Linked to Oesophageal Cancer in 2017

Dr Tariq Drabu said “Japanese researchers suggest a pathogen in the oral cavity could be related to oesophageal cancer development.”

Dr Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon based in Manchester in the United Kingdom. He is also one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom before working in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. He always showed a passion in oral surgery which resulted in him completing his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Today Dr Drabu is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale.

Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article recently published on a top dental website.

Dr Tariq Drabu said “Japanese researchers have suggested a pathogen found in the oral cavity could be related to oesophageal cancer development. The oral bacteria, F.nucleatum, is also responsible for periodontal disease, a severe bacteria gum disease which eats away at the supporting structures of the tooth. This bacteria has also been detected in colon cancer tissues and could also have an effect on the development of colorectal cancers.”

Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say “Kumamoto University in Japan suspect this oral bacteria could pay a role in the cause of oesophageal cancer. They analysed DNA of cancer tissue from three hundred and twenty five patients who underwent surgery for oesophageal cancer at the Kumamoto University Hospital. Seventy four patients (twenty three percent) had F.Nucleatum in the tissue, they also identified that those with F.nucleatum had a shorter survival rate and more aggressive tumours.”

Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying “This is useful information, of course further research will be needed to confirm these findings. It could help dental professionals moving forward to identify patients with higher risk and ensure that they are monitored and treated effectively to help catch any cancers as early as possible. It could also be useful to identify patients who are at a higher risk of periodontal disease. I am excited to see how this research can assist us in the dental industry moving forward.”
