Dr Tariq Drabu Discusses Improving Periodontal Disease with Diet in 2016

Dr Tariq Drabu said “A pilot study has been conducted identifying if an anti-inflammatory diet could be effective in patients with periodontal disease.”

Dr Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon based in Manchester in the United Kingdom. He is also one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom before working in some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. He always showed a passion in oral surgery which resulted in him completing his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Today Dr Drabu is the owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He is also an active mentor and tutor to postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Dr Tariq Drabu was speaking about an article published on 12 August 2016 on a top dental website.

Dr Tariq Drabu in Manchester said “An anti-inflammatory diet could be effective in patients with periodontal disease, a new pilot study has revealed. The study worked on patients reducing their carb intake, while increasing Omega-3 fatty acids. German researchers published their experience in the BMC Oral Health journal.”

Dr Tariq Drabu went on to say “Patients were required to increase their Omega-3 fatty acids, their Vitamin C and Vitamin D intake, along with effective antioxidants. All participants were over the age of eighteen with gingivitis. Fifteen participants took part in the pilot study, ten of which were put on a low carb anti-inflammatory diet for a period of six weeks, while five continued with their typical carb rich diet for six weeks.”

Dr Tariq Drabu closed in saying “All the participants followed their regular oral health routine. After four weeks, signs of improvement were noted in the group eating the non-inflammatory diet when compared to those that didn't make any changes to their diet. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease which can affect other organs within the body and can lead to numerous health conditions. Incorporating a diet that includes anti-inflammatory properties in patients with gingivitis could potentially reduce the risk of the gum disease progressing to the severe periodontal disease moving forward.”
