Researchers at the University of Aberdeen, U.K. have developed a software that helps battlefield medical professionals to create 3D models of their brains. These models are sent to experts for analysis to determine appropriate course of action. The project was funded by the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory's (DSTL) Centre for Defense Enterprise, which is a part of the Ministry of Defense, U.K. Though this technology is in its primary stage, but trials conducted in patients in hospital patients have shown its viability. Medical ultrasound probes play a vital role in determining bleeding in the brain and capturing images. The ultrasound image of brain is captured with the help of scanners available in hospitals. The information about bleeding in brain can be acquired with the help of a movable sensor attached to probe that scans certain parts of skull. This probe can capture up to 40 images per second and as a result, 3D image can be obtained that can be built from 2,000 individual photos.
Dr. Leila Eadie, a researcher at the Centre for Rural Health at the University of Aberdeen, said, "There is a clear need for this technology, as outlined by DSTL. Traumatic brain injury [TBI] is a big problem for the military, especially because it can be difficult to spot in the field and if left untreated, it can have long-term effects. Ultrasound is not normally used for imaging the brain, but we hope to prove through further investigations that it is a viable method of making an early diagnosis of head injury whilst in the field." After scanning with the help of probes, the images are sent to experts and appropriate action can be taken. This technology is helpful to determine minor injuries in brain in military applications as well as civilian applications.
