Pollution Prevention Products Designed to Help Companies Avoid Prosecution and Environmental Fines

Green Rhino 'EnviroPad' Spill Mat - Revolutionising the Drip Tray. WINNER of the Green Apple Environmental Award for Best Practice November 2014. And Winner of the ‘Innovation Category’ at the North West Green Hero Award.

Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd has exclusively brought to the UK market an innovative range of pollution prevention and spill clean-up products such as Oil Spill Kits, Maintenance Spill Products and Chemical Spill Products. Designed to help maintenance, engineering and processing firms avoid potential prosecution and environmental fines.

Seddons has partnered with Capture Green Environmental Solutions to exclusively offer Green Rhino® products. The premium Green Rhino® products incorporate a unique polymer technology, which offers a state-of-the-art and yet cost-effective solution to pollution prevention. They contain polymers which transform hydrocarbons such as Oil, Diesel and Petrol into a rubber-like solid within just a few minutes, preventing the release of contaminated water or hazardous fluids into the workplace or local environment.

The showcase, leading product in the polymers range is the Green Rhino® EnviroPad which presents a revolutionary, state of the art method of spill containment. Designed to replace traditional drip trays & absorbent products, the EnviroPad utilises sophisticated polymer technology to retain spills & drips when using or storing plant, tools or fuel containers. Unlike any other product available on the market, it ‘locks in’ hydrocarbons, solidifying & immobilising hazardous fluids into a dry, solid mass, helping organisations to avoid prosecution & heavy environmental fines for contaminated ground water.

This is a significant problem as in a single month in 2013, the Environment Agency prosecuted UK companies for pollution & environmental crime, resulting in fines totalling over £800,000 & additional legal costs for those companies totalling more than £170,000.

The construction & industrial sectors are a major source of pollution, creating more water pollution incidents than many other sectors. When hydrocarbons get into the waterways, they poison water life & any animals that drink from them. Hydrocarbons on sites can also soak into the groundwater, a source of human drinking water, so the EnviroPad presents an environmentally sound, yet practical, means of eradicating this risk. The EnviroPad is ideal for use in maintenance, engineering & processing plants, as it can be placed directly underneath a wide range of plant equipment such as Compressors, Generators & Oil Containers. It captures spillages, both from leaking equipment and during refuelling activities.

Other products on the market simply absorb oil like a sponge but the Green Rhino EnviroPad offers huge advantages in that it encapsulates hydrocarbons into the polymer, hugely reducing the risk of pollution entering the environment. Available in three sizes, the largest of which can retain up to 28 litres of hydrocarbons, the EnviroPad comprises a membrane made up of two layers of a geo-textile with state-of-the-art polymers embedded between the layers. This hybrid creates a filtration fabric that encapsulates hydrocarbons & forces them to unsaturated areas of the fabric. This fabric allows water to pass through it, yet it solidifies hydrocarbons almost instantly upon contact.

The EnviroPad is lightweight & when not in use, can be easily folded & stored away. It can be repeatedly used until it is completely solidified, at which point it can simply be disposed of into standard hazardous waste bins. The large EnviroPad is suitable for seating larger plant that can potentially leak oil, such as Lighting Towers & Compressors, & equipment can be easily wheeled or placed onto it.

The EnviroPad has already been recognised for its green credentials by recently winning a Gold Level Green Apple Environmental Award for Best Practice, the highest level in the ‘Pollution Prevention’ category of the awards. The Green Apple Environmental Awards are a national campaign to find Britain’s greenest companies, councils & communities. Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd competed against more than 500 other nominations in the Green Apple Environmental Awards for Best Practice and a presentation was made to the company at The Houses of Parliament in November 2014.

The Green Apple accolade came on the back of another award received for the EnviroPad a month earlier in October 2014, where Seddons Plant & Engineers was declared winner of the Environmental Innovation Award at the North West Green Hero Awards. This was the most fiercely contested category in the UK’s most prestigious regional celebration of environmental business excellence.

The Seddons Plant & Engineers environmental range also includes Spill Kits of various capacities from 15 to 220 litres which enable emergency response to oil, chemical and hazardous fluid spills in the working environment.
