Flappy BirdPC, Android and iOS: a source of frustration and addiction for some and a revenue stream for others

The legal issue at hand was a case from Nintendo regarding some art assets that the game used.

If you are the sort of person who owns a smartphone and enjoys mobile gaming, then chances are you are already familiar with the most popular mobile game of this year, Flappy BirdPC, Android, iOS. This game is a fairly standard side scroller. You control a bird named Faby and your objective is to travel through the unending pipe rows of various shapes that appear every 1.5 seconds or so and stand in your way. If you touch any of the pipes, the game is over and you have to start again. But it’s not the game mechanics that make this game so interesting. It is clouded in mystery and various controversies that accompanied this particular game’s success.
The original version of this game(Flappy BirdPC version still exists though) was taken down from all official App stores. It was done by the game developer himself. Before it was taken down, though, the daily sales for this game were astronomical (Nguyen claimed to have been earning over $50,000 daily just from the in-game advertisement). His name is Dong Nguyen and he is a Vietnamese game developer. The main reason for taking the game down was that he felt guilty due to the game’s addictiveness. When he first made the announcement on Twitter, he was assaulted by fans of the game that were making death threats and suicide promises. I guess this game really is quite addictive, huh. The promise was delivered and the game was taken off the market, regardless of the fan’s reaction. However, in August 2014 the new and revised version of the game appeared on the Amazon Fire TV (which is Amazon’s Application store) as an exclusive. It is, supposedly, less addictive and features a multiplayer option. It is called Flappy Birds Family (Flappy BirdPC version is also available).
Some newspapers (such as TuoiTre News, a Vietnamese newspaper written in English) have proposed that the real reason for taking the game down was some legal issue and it had nothing to do with the game’s addictiveness. The legal issue at hand was a case from Nintendo regarding some art assets that the game used. These assets look very similar to the ones used in Mario games (pipes, for example). This claim, however, was disproved by Nintendo spokesperson.
If you want to try Flappy Bird PC, Android, iOSfor free and see for yourself, you can use your browserto visit one of the many web sites (be sure to use an anti-virus and a firewall, though, to avoid potential malware) and try it out. Be careful when playing one of the many clones, though. There was a famous case earlier this year: it included about 100 different celebrities having their private data (such as their photos, pictures, etc.) stolen from their phones using the Flappy Bird’s game client that contained malicious software. Flappy Bird PC version can also contain malware, so be wary of that
