Harlem Youth Organization to Honor Star Athletes. Olympian Sanya Richards-Ross will Emcee

Harlem and New York's elite sports community prepare for the first Scholarship and Awards Dinner for Youth On The Move In The Community, Inc., in an effort to maintain much needed sports and education programs. Show your support alongside Olympian Sanya Richards-Ross and honorees: Olympian Gail Marquis, Dr. Lynne Holden, former New York Giant Carl Banks and the center’s director, Elijah Brooks at the fundraiser in Harlem, New York on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Activities will include a reception and silent auction.

New York, NY, September 11, 2014 -- Youth On The Move In The Community Inc., announced today that it will honor the center’s Director, Elijah Brooks, Dr. Lynne Holden, Gail Marquis and Carl Banks at the First Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner. The star-studded event will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Gatehouse in Harlem. Track and field star Sanya Richards-Ross will be the emcee for the evening. Youth On The Move’s student-athletes are expected to participate.

“I am honored to be recognized by the community that I serve,” said Elijah Brooks Executive Director. “We have extremely limited resources, and with the outreach available through our Board members and the Harlem community, this event is an opportunity to make a significant impact on the center’s future.”

There is a tremendous need for sports and afterschool programs in Harlem, to encourage movement and positive social interaction. And more importantly, to provide a safe environment for youth who move about daily life near the center’s gang-ridden neighborhood. Youth On The Move motivates children to dream, and partners them with caring adults and coaches who nourish those dreams. The organization and Brooks use competitive sports, health and wellness, and educational milestones as a form of life support for students and their family.

Without community support, Youth On The Move In The Community, Inc. may no longer have the ability to meet its operating expenses. It will have to close the doors not only on the center but also on the dreams of hundreds of children, all with inspiring life stories.

“Too many families lack the resources their children need to live a happy, safe life,” said Morris McWilliams, President of the Youth On The Move Board of Directors. “ We’re happy to have the opportunity to honor those who serve as a dynamic example for our children. And we hope that this fundraiser will help to mobilize the necessary financial support.”

When: Wednesday, September 17th, 2014 at 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Where: The Gatehouse, 150 Convent Avenue in Harlem, New York City.
