LbL Home Defense' Eddie Vanaken Lauds University of Kentucky's Campus-wide Surveillance Camera Project

Many comment that the University of Kentucky's in-campus security solution is too expensive and high-end, but local home defense provider believes school is on the right track.

Cerulean, KY – Recently, the University of Kentucky in Lexington began installing surveillance cameras and requiring campus goers to wear identification cards that will track one's activity within the university grounds—raising eyebrows among students and teachers alike.

Over 3,000 new plain-sight and hidden cameras are currently being installed all over the campus as part of the $5 million bid to comply with higher education requirements starting in March 2013. Prior to the opening of classes in August 28, magnetic strip readers were also in place where students and faculty are required to swipe their ID's and their comings-and-goings recorded in a central database. The university's assistant vice-president for security, Anthony Beatty, who served as campus police officer in the 1970's and later police chief of the Lexington Police Department before his current position, said the security providers are aiming to finish the ambitious project before the end of the year.

The University of Kentucky's Police Department controls the mixture of pan/tilt/zoom and fixed cameras as well as the database for the security system, giving it "unprecedented capability for monitoring the campus" as Police Chief Joe Monroe puts it.

But some frown over the arrangement. "This is too much information in the hands of security officers," said one student who asked to be unidentified.

However, recent crimes occurring in school grounds all over the United States including random shootings where students and teachers were targeted dispel such complaints and comments.

"One cannot put a price tag to personal protection from crime," says LbL Home Defense Products owner Eddie Vanaken. "Our times have changed and we are often confronted with events when we begin to ask what could have been done to prevent these. The University of Kentucky's move to secure people in their area of responsibility and provide for a quick response is long overdue and highly commendable."

LbL Home Defense, www.lblhomedefenseprodcuts.com, is an online resource for home and personal security products including hidden cameras, surveillance cameras, CCTV's and other security systems. Vanaken launched the website to put these products in a single page, when most searches for security products are often directed to separate websites. The website has a Hidden Cameras page dedicated to home-size security cameras and recorders of every sort.

"I launched LbL Home Defense after being a victim of burglary," said Vanaken. "Confronted with a daunting task of searching for security products, I came up with the idea of building a website solely for the niche—showcasing security products and providing insight about personal and property crime prevention."

Operating from Cerulean, Kentucky, LbL Home Defense served the city and nearby areas before going on a full launch to serve the whole of United States through the website.

Vanaken makes it a personal mission to educate others about the value of safety and security through his blogs and newsletters in the website.

"The university may be spending a big amount of money for the security camera project, but it's a small price to pay compared to what it would accomplish," said Vanaken.

LbL Home Defense also catalogue Home Security, Personal Security, Child Safety and Animal Repeller products. There is also a section for Diversion Safes and Safety Kits, all of which are accessible to everyone without having to sign-up.
