Briscoe Protective Systems Inc. Celebrates 35 Years of Offering Fire Safety Equipment and Giving Back to the Community

Long Island and New York City’s Premier Protective Systems Company Continues to Carry on its Founder’s Legacy

It was in 1978 when gasoline costs 67 cents a gallon, the New York Yankees were World Series Champions, and Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” was Song of the Year that a small residential security alarm company was established in Brooklyn. Since then, it has expanded into Long Island, providing premier fire and security alarm products for commercial and residential clients.

This year marks Briscoe Protective Systems Inc.’s 35 years in business, serving customers in the five boroughs and the Long Island area this summer, with locations in Centereach and New York City.

The company is named after Joseph Bartholomew “Bert” Briscoe, grandfather of current President Bob Williams. Mr. Briscoe was best known for training boxing great Archie Moore, who won the World Light-Heavyweight Championship in 1952. Mr. Briscoe believed that the “things you make in life” creates who you are, and the most important thing you can do is make a difference in the lives of your fellow man, which led to Briscoe Protective Systems’ belief of “People Helping People Make a Difference.”

Mr. Williams found a business partner and established Briscoe out of a garage on Stuart Street in Brooklyn. The company specialized in residential security alarms under the name, Delco Security Systems. The company began to grow its business and relocated to 2909 Quentin Road in Brooklyn. Briscoe shared its first radio system with a plumbing contractor and a delivery service on the same frequency.

For external communications, Briscoe used a fax machine costing $1,800, a Radio Shack Tandy 100 computer, and beepers to communicate with one another. “The good old days weren’t that good, when you think of all the modern technological advantages we have today,” Mr. Williams says.

After ten years, Briscoe decided to establish a separate fire alarm equipment distribution company specializing in New York City approved fire alarms. This branch of the company was so successful that, in 1993, they decided to combine the two companies.
Later that year, the company sold its non-commercial security accounts in order to focus more on the commercial and institutional market. It was also selected to become a Strategic Partner for Edwards System Technology’s fire alarm equipment.
As its needs expanded, the company needed more space. They moved to Great Neck, and then Smithtown before finally settling into its existing location in 2006 at Briscoe Plaza, 99 Mark Tree Road in Centereach. Briscoe also maintains a sales and conference center at 292 Fifth Ave in New York City.

“We continue to adapt and grow. This year, we have accelerated our push into the security, access control and video markets, and have made strategic alliances with certain suppliers, which afford us the ability to offer our customers integrated systems that can be managed remotely from a smartphone, computer terminal or by our office,” Mr. Williams says.

Briscoe has received numerous honors from the fire safety equipment industry. This year, the company was named to Edwards Systems Technology’s 1 Million Dollar Club, making them one of the few EST fire equipment distributors to achieve the $1 million mark in sales. In addition, Security Distributing and Marketing magazine named Briscoe as one of the top 100 companies out of 7,000 national manufacturers and distributors.

Mr. Williams has over 35 years of experience in the life/safety industry. He has served in the U.S. Army and was also a volunteer firefighter in the Smithtown Fire Department. He is also a New York State-certified security and fire alarm course instructor.

Briscoe has played a vital role in educating and assisting its surrounding communities. Each year, Briscoe gives out the Bert Briscoe Memorial Scholarship. During Christmastime, Briscoe donates toys to the children at Stony Brook University Hospital’s Burn Unit. In addition, Briscoe provides free educational seminars covering the care and handling of the fire alarm systems common to these companies’ sites. They thoroughly go over fire safety procedures to ensure the safety of every company in the community. So far, more than 800 people have taken part in these seminars.

“We take the beliefs that Bert passed on to us very seriously. We believe it is our duty to help educate and assist others in reaching their full potential so that one day they can do the same for others,” Mr. Williams says. “Our profound history shows that our primary goal has always been to protect and serve others so that they can go about their lives in a safe and positive way. That’s what Briscoe stands for.”
