Greenlane to Upgrade Landfill Gas at a BFI Canada Site in Quebec to Become Canada’s Largest Biomethane Project

Greenlane Biogas is pleased to confirm that it will install several Torara+ landfill gas upgrading systems, along with some additional compression and gas processing equipment, at BFI’s Lachenaie landfill, located near Montreal, Quebec.

Burnaby BC, April 24, 2013 -- Greenlane Biogas is pleased to confirm that it will install several Torara+ landfill gas upgrading systems, along with some additional compression and gas processing equipment, at BFI’s Lachenaie landfill, located near Montreal, Quebec. The facility will upgrade 10,000 scfm (approximately 16,000 Nm3/hr) of landfill gas, making it the largest renewable natural gas (RNG) project in Canada and also one of the largest worldwide.

The BFI Lachenaie landfill is located approximately 32 kilometres northeast of the city of Montreal in the City of Terrebonne, Quebec. The site receives up to 1.3 million tonnes of non-hazardous solid waste per year. The landfill also has a history of generating clean energy, since a power generation system was installed with a capacity of 4 MW in 1994. The renewable natural gas will be injected into a high pressure pipeline running along the south side of the property.

“This project is an important step for BFI Canada and its parent company Progressive Waste Solutions,” said Yves Normandin, Vice President Quebec for BFI Canada, “This is group’s first landfill gas upgrading project in its history, so we were very careful and diligent about selecting system suppliers. After more than five years of studies and evaluations, we selected Greenlane Biogas as our partner because of a combination of their cost competitiveness, high methane recovery rates, and their long track record of successfully executing projects near the capacities we require. We are very pleased to be working with Greenlane on this project.”

Sean Mezei, President of Greenlane North America said: “This is a significant project for Greenlane Biogas and the system provided will raise the bar for methane yields in landfill gas upgrading service. The economies of scale we are able to utilize for this project will also allow us to provide industry leading capital costs per volume of gas upgraded. This combination of economic benefits, plus our ability to meet the stringent gas quality requirements of TransCanada, is expected to allow several other landfill sites considering upgrading to renewable natural gas as an economically attractive option.”

Greenlane’s upgrading process uses water to upgrade biogas to become interchangeable with conventional natural gas, either for use in pipelines or as CNG vehicle fuel. Greenlane’s water scrubbing technology also minimizes its water consumption requirement by recycling over 99% of the water used for upgrading process back into the system. Over twenty years of experience has also allowed the Greenlane design to both minimize the amount of energy required and maximize the methane yield through the process.
