Giving Back to the Environment and Community: Sustainable Mining Summit in Toronto to Engage Key Players in the Industry

Being held in Canada on 28-29 May 2013, the 2nd Annual Global Sustainable Mining Summit will gather sustainability and CSR specialists from mining firms around the globe to discuss how the mining industry can improve it's ethical practices and build a better sustainability portfolio.

Deloitte recently reported that mining companies are looking at attaining a new level of responsible behaviour, considering the requirements of all relevant stakeholders such as government, investors and the community. The report entitled “Tracking the Trends 2013: The Top 10 Issues Mining Companies may Face in the Coming Year”, stated that a growing number of mining companies are filing resolutions on a wide range of sustainability-related issues including climate change, sustainability reporting, energy-water scarcity etc.

Integrating sustainability into core business practices will be the focal point of discussion amongst subject specialists at the 2nd Annual Global Sustainable Mining Summit, to be held on 28-29 May 2013 in Toronto – Canada. Supported by the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, the Peruvian Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Women in Mining portal and Women in Mining Canada, the conference will delve into the current sustainability concerns in mining and recognise the interconnections between the economy, the environment, and society to ensure that today's needs for mineral resources are met, without compromising the needs of the future generations.

Elisa Tonda, Head (Business and Industry Unit), Sustainable Consumption and Production, United Nations Environment Programme will speak about enhancing the global sustainability of metals and mining of metallic minerals along their life cycle and the UNEP S4M Initiative. Minna Alia, Senior Vice President, Communications and Corporate Responsibility, Outotec will lead a session on sustainable mining throughout the supply chain and the role of technology as a catalyst in achieving sustainability goals. From Rio Tinto, Julie Gelfand who is Vice President – Environment and Social Responsibility, will talk about the strategies adopted to increase positive impacts on biodiversity. The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, Gord Miller will address the conference on opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction. Michael Jarvis, Team Leader - Governance for Extractive Industries, World Bank will lead a session on Governance and ESG, where he will review the growing transparency requirements in the mining sector. A presentation on trends and challenges in sustainability reporting will be made by Gonzalo Rios, VP Corporate Responsibility at Aura Minerals.

Speakers and panel members also include Suresh Rajapakse, VP, Mining (Health, Safety, Environment, Security and Sustainability) - Arcelor Mittal, John Hasyn, Director of CSR, Dundee Precious Metals, Claude Perras,
Head Of Sustainability, London Mining Plc, Charlene Easton, Director, Social Responsibility, Xstrata Nickel, Leonard Rickard, Aboriginal Affairs Manager, Detour Gold Corporation, Simon Jimenez, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Barrick Gold to name a few. They will address the summit on important topics like aboriginal participation, compatibility mode, effective community engagement, government strategy and vision for sustainable mine development and many more. Attendees will have a chance to network, share knowledge, and identify their capacity to contribute to sustainable development in mining.
