Tess O’Neill is an investigative journalist assigned to profile renowned television personality and psychic medium Judith Knight. Judith claims to make contact with people who have died, connecting them with people in the audience.
The assignment is no accident. Tess is the daughter of the brilliant late science writer Robert O’Neill, who would have never believed in Judith’s abilities. Tess’ every instinct suggests to her that Judith is a charlatan. But what if she’s not? Things happen that cause Tess to re-examine the possibility that Judith does what she says she does. Judith claims that Robert is reaching out to Tess from beyond the grave.
Tess enlists the aid of Alex Rimbaud, a scientist, skeptic, and Robert’s former protégé. He is convinced that Judith is a bunco artist and plans to publish a magazine piece exposing her as a fraud. While Tess consults Alex, their long-repressed passion for each other is revived.
Tess, Alex and Judith are headed for a showdown as Tess is determined to learn the truth of things once and for all. Is Judith a fraud? Or is Robert actually trying to make contact with her from the Beyond? What will this bode for Tess’ and Alex’s future together?
Dale Griffiths Stamos is playwright. She received the Heideman Award from the Actors Theatre of Louisville for her short play “The Unintended Video” and won the Jewel Box Theatre Original Playwriting Competition for her full-length drama “Dialectics of the Heart,” which has been produced at Edgemar Center. Ms. Stamos received an Emmy ® nomination for the CBS TV special “Words Up!”
Deborah LaVine directs. She has helmed over 300 professional theater productions across the country. A much-honored director, she has received the Ovation Award (“Napoli Millionaria”), the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, the NAACP Theatre Award (“Distant Fires”) and 14 Drama-Logue Awards. She currently serves as Co-Program Chair of the Film Directing Program at CalArts, an MFA level narrative film directing program.
Rob Estes plays Alex. Nationally known for his starring roles in several television series (“90210,” “Women’s Murder Club,” “Suddenly Susan,” “Melrose Place,” “Silk Stalkings”), he also appeared at Edgemar Center in “Mental: The Musical.” He will be seen this spring in the new feature film “Hello, Herman.”
Michelle Danner portrays Judith. The Artistic Director of Edgemar Center for the Arts, she also appears in “Hello, Herman,” a feature film which she also directed for All In Films. Her stage acting credits include “Ghosts,” “Hedda Gabler,” “Antigone,” “The House of Yes,” “The Rose Tattoo,” “The Shadow Box,” and much more.
Jane Hajduk performs the role of Tess. She is known for her work in feature films (including a few of them, “The Shaggy Dog,” “Zoom,” “Joe Somebody” with husband Tim Allen), television series appearances (“NCIS,” “Monk,” “Chicago Hope”), and voice characterizations for animation.
The title of the play, “One White Crow,” is explained during the course of the narrative. It’s a reference to a quote by William James (1842-1910), the father of modern psychology. He was also famous as a skeptic and a debunker of practitioners of the paranormal.
Will you believe that the dead can speak from beyond the grave? See “One White Crow,” then decide.
