Tempdent Comment on The General Dental Councils New Guidance

Managing Director of Tempdent comment on the new guidance that has been put in place by The General Dental Council which outlines what is to be expected of a registrant employing trainee dental nurses and dental technician

The General Dental Council has put in place a new guidance which explains what is expected of a registrant employing trainee dental nurses and dental technicians. Anyone employing trainee dental technicians or nurses through training, supervising or employment, will need to make themselves familiar with these new changes.

The previous guidance, which ran from 31 July 2006 to 30 August 2008, was put in place during the transitional period for dental care professionals, meaning they could register with the GDC without having a formal qualification.

Managing Director of Tempdent, Lorraine Nadel believes that the new guidance 'Will ensure that trainee dental nurses and technicians are trained to higher standards, creating a more professional, safe and efficient working environment, benefiting future patients and employees.'

The new guidance defines a trainee dental nurse or technician as a student studying on a programme that directly leads to GDC registration, or a student enrolled or waiting to start a programme that will lead to GDC registration. Any course a student enrols on will need to be a recognised programme for registration.

Some main key changes to this guidance include ensuring that the trainee is capable of enrolling on a programme that is recognised for registration; they must enrol on this course and follow all requirements. GDC registrant should carry out the required supervision on behalf of the student, taking full responsibility and facilitating and supporting the student throughout the course.

The trainee must also begin their recognised course within two years of starting employment and they should achieve their qualifications and register with the GDC within the duration of the programme or up to one year after. Before any work is undertaken by the trainee however, an induction must take place which should include training in how to protect patient confidentiality and safety, how to control infections, how to protect vulnerable children and adults and how to deal with medical emergencies. All training must be noted in a log book by the trainee which will be signed by the GDC supervisor.

It is also mentioned that GDC registrants, who supervise, employ or train a trainee dental nurse or trainee dental technician that does not follow the new guidance, or any other standards for dental professionals risk going through a procedure that will analyse whether their fitness to practise is impaired.
