Overnight storms down trees

Flooding, rain and lightning kept Orange County firefighters busy through Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday morning.

Lightning struck one home in east Orange County, forcing a mother to grab her two children and run from a late-night house fire.
Seminole County officials say they didn't get as many calls for service during and after the storm. However, the heavy rain and strong winds did bring down trees across the county.

In fact, a 100-year-old tree crashed down onto the roof of a Sanford home on South Oregon Avenue. The homeowner said he couldn't get his cars out of the garage because of the fallen tree.

Tree removal experts said weak roots caused it to come down.

Radoslave Liav's car was almost struck by the fallen tree. The 22-year-old's Honda Civic was parked in the driveway, just a few inches from where the tree fell. He said it sounded like something was being chopped down last night when the tree fell. He couldn't believe the scene outside his parents' house.

"I wasn't like, 'oh my God' when I heard it, but I was like, 'oh my God' when I came outside," Liav said. "Luckily it was not hit at all."

Intense wind, rain and lightning throughout Central Florida generated calls for tree removal agencies.

"This time of year we are busy to the max," said Jim Phillips with Tree Works Now.

A 40-year-old Laurel Oak Tree in Maitland was a threat in front of the Lake Howell Family Medicine building on Ruby Court.

Office Manager and Owner Dottie Silverman said she was praying last night that the tree would not fall down.

"We got it inspected and they said it was just a matter of time before a storm came and took it," Silverman said.
Monday morning she said she was grateful it was still standing.

"Yes. It stayed. I'm glad it's gone today," Silverman said.
Phillips said they see a spike of calls this time of year.

"The first day of hurricane season, everyone wakes up and says 'I need this work done yesterday,'" Phillips said.
Phillips pointed out the vulnerable areas inside the trunk on Ruby Court. He said many times damage to your property is preventable.

"We get called in the middle of the night. We go there and we can tell that the tree gave lots of warning signs long before it had a problem and nothing was done about it," Phillips said.

The roof of the home on South Oregon Avenue in Sanford suffered some damage, but the owner said he's glad no one was hurt.
"I feel great because my car is okay," Liav said.

Experts said many times tree removal agencies will come out and give you a free estimate.

Phillips said many people are strapped for cash during this tough economy- and don't make it a priority to remove the tree until it's too late.
