IEEE to hold Technology Time Machine Symposium in Hong Kong

ASTRI and HKUST will co-organize the first IEEE Technology Time Machine (TTM) Symposium in Hong Kong in June. Themed “Technologies beyond 2020”, the Symposium will cover a selected set of potentially high impact emerging technologies.

Hong Kong will play host to the first IEEE Technology Time Machine (TTM) Symposium at Sheraton Hotel from 1 to 3 June. Themed “Technologies beyond 2020”, the TTM Symposium, organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and co-organized by Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), will cover a selected set of potentially high impact emerging technologies as well as their current state of maturity and scenarios for the future.

Designed for senior business leaders, innovators, academics and decision makers in governments, the TTM Symposium will explore critical innovations and future directions in wireless, biotechnology, cloud computing, e-health, smart grid, Internet of Things, disruptive technologies to replace silicon, as well as other technological areas. It will be structured to facilitate discussions among participants and speakers about the evolutionary and revolutionary advances in technology landscapes leading up to 2020 and how the trend will impact the business sector. As the number of participants will be kept relatively small, the Symposium provides an excellent opportunity for informal interaction among delegates.

The TTM Symposium features presentations given by globally recognized experts who are leaders in their respective field. Among the many thought provoking presentations are “Thinking on Transformation of Information Communications Technologies” by Prof. Hequan Wu, Academician and former Vice-President of Chinese Academy of Engineering; “Technology’s contribution to creating an information society friendly to humans and the earth” by Mr Nobuhiro Endo, President (Representative Director) of NEC, Japan; “CeNSE: A Central Nervous System for the Earth” by Dr Peter Hartwell, Distinguished Technologist, Hewlett-Packard, USA; “The Smart Grid: Power for the 21st Century” by Prof. George Arnold, National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA; and “Future direction of digital contents: What and how will we enjoy at home in 2020?” by Prof. Masahiro Fujita, President of System Technologies Laboratories, Sony Corporation, Japan.

At the end of the 3-day Symposium, attendees may enjoy the opportunity to visit some leading Hong Kong and Chinese research institutes and industries. For further information about the TTM Symposium, please visit its special website at http://www.techbeyond2020.ust.hk/agenda.html.

Concurrently on 3 June, the Hong Kong Section of IEEE will organize the IEEE Cloud Computing Symposium 2011 at Sheraton Hotel with Dr Cheung Nim-kwan, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, serving as the Convener. Top experts in Cloud Computing around the world will gather in a panel discussion session to discuss the recent development in Cloud Computing Standards. This will be followed by sharing of local researchers about their works and applications in universities in Hong Kong. Agenda of the Symposium is available at http://www.ieee.org.hk/cloud/agenda.htm.

Both symposia are now open for registration. Separate registrations are required. For TTM, please register at http://www.techbeyond2020.ust.hk/register.html, and for Cloud Computing Symposium, http://www.ieee.org.hk/cloud/register.htm.
