New Delhi - Urjavaran Foundation and International Copper Promotion Council India (ICPCI) have conferred Empower Awards 2009 on the manufacturers of star-rated appliances as laid down by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India. The goal of Empower Awards 2009 is to recognize and to provide a thrust to the efforts of the Central and the State Governments to promote and support Efficient use of Energy, Energy Conservation and reduce GHG emissions.

India is the world's 6th largest energy consumer and our energy consumption is growing at over 10% per annum. Rising incomes, accelerated industrialization, urbanization and population growth have all contributed to additional demand on existing supply. The huge demand-supply gap for the current year is pegged at 15% peaking deficit and 9% energy shortage leading to frequent power cuts in the country with residential sectors being the most affected. India is expected to add 62,374 MW against the target of 78,700 MW during the 11th Plan. The total demand for electricity in India is expected to cross 950,000 MW by 2030.

It is estimated that about 12000 MW of additional generation capacity can be avoided by 2017 through efficiency improvement measures at the end-use segment of electricity alone. Further improving energy efficiency can also help overcome the power deficit, which is one of the most compelling infrastructural bottlenecks to sustaining the momentum of India's growth. Energy efficient appliances and equipments have proven to be one of most cost effective tool globally to add wattage capacity to the national grid with minimum resource both time and money.

Understanding this need Empower Awards recognizes appliances that conform and go beyond the requisite energy standards and lead to optimal electricity utilization during operations. The Empower Awards 2009 focused on Air Conditioners, Water Pumps and Florescent Tube Lights. The occasion brought together various agencies within the Public and Private sectors, Chambers of Commerce and Industries, Educational Institutions, Consultants, and Civic Forums on to a common platform.

Chief Guest Shri Bharatsinh Solanki, former Minister of State - Power, Government of India said, "Efficiency improvement measures at the end-use of electricity consumption will result in the reversal of at-least 25% of climate change impact. Yet consumers, whether institutional or individuals often end up purchasing inefficient products due to an inadequate appreciation that energy efficient equipment are cheaper over their lifetime, if one calculates the saved energy costs. BEE set up under the Ministry of Power is the nodal agency which has been mandated to set up energy efficiency standards and labels which would assist the end consumer in making an informed choice."

Elaborating on the Bureau of Energy Efficiency's (BEE) mandate, Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, mentioned, "India, as a developing nation, is specifically faced with the challenge of sustaining its rapid economic growth while dealing with the global threat of climate change. The Hon'ble Prime Minister's National Action Plan on Climate Change was launched in response to this challenge. There is also a great incentive for Energy Efficiency projects from a societal point of view, since the cost of generating new energy is 3 times the cost of saving energy. As per a World Bank study India can reduce its annual electricity usage by 183.5 billion kWh by investing US$ 10 billion in Energy Efficiency improvements."

Mrs. Dhun Engineer, President, Urjavaran Foundation further added, "Urjavaran Foundation is taking up several initiatives toward Energy Conservation and Environmental Preservation in all sectors. With the second edition of the Empower Awards, we are recognizing Star performers for their contribution towards efficient use of Energy and Energy Conservation. We also hope these awards will help in increasing consumer awareness on the need to purchase appliances of higher star rating, thus helping the Nation in its goal towards increased Energy Efficiency".

Speaking about the International Copper Promotion Council's role in the promotion of energy efficiency policies of the government, Mr. Manas Kundu, Director, Energy Solutions mentioned, "ICPCI pursues programs which reduce the demand for energy in ways that benefit the environment and do not adversely impact living standards. ICPCI works with various organizations and government bodies worldwide to help raise and globally harmonize minimum efficiency performance standards (MEPS) to levels that reflect best available level of technology. ICPCI's programs aim at assisting the Indian government in its efforts to reduce impact on climate change challenges by strengthening the link between the consumers, stakeholders of Energy Efficiency Mission and supporting conducive policies and incentives.
