Armenia And Diaspora Join To Help Save Tatev

$10 Donations Buys Chance for All-expenses-paid Invite to Armenia and Tatev Revival Project Launch Event.

TATEV, Republic of Armenia - Two winners will receive travel and accommodations to the Saturday, October 16, 2010, spectacular launch event of the Tatev Revival Project. To qualify for the $5,000-value prize, $10 Tatev Revival Project fundraiser tickets must be purchased on-line at Tatev.am.

"This is a chance for all Armenians and non-Armenians all over the world to intervene and save this 9th century crown jewel in Armenian history" said Zarmine Zeitountsian, Fundraising Coordinator of the Tatev Revival Project. "We hope that through the fundraiser, donors will take a moment to learn about this historic undertaking, take a chance on winning a round-trip vacation, and tell others about our long-term plans in Southern Armenia."

The two winners of the fundraiser will have an opportunity to ride the world's longest aerial tramway to Tatev on its opening day. Republic of Armenia President Serge Sargsyan and Catholicos of All-Armenians Garegin II will be the first to ride the teleferic that spans 5.7 kilmoters (3.5 miles) over the Vorotan Gorge.

"The fundraiser is one of the many community-building outreach campaigns that are part of the launch of the Tatev Revival Project," said Pegor Papazian, CEO of the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia, the organization spearheading the effort. "While the fundraiser is reaching out to those living in Yerevan and the Armenian Diaspora, last week we held two essay writing contests for the villagers that house the tramway stations."

Halidzor and Tatev community members were asked to write an essay recommending a name for the tramway and explain their choice. The essays were judged by a jury comprised of the representatives of the Competitiveness Foundation, the Armenian Apostolic Church and the tramway construction company. The winners of the competition in each of the villages were awarded a brand new personal computer with Internet access. Second and third place winners received a photo camera and a DVD player accordingly. Winning essays will be posted on the Tatev.am website, and the winners names will be noted on placards at both tramway stations.

"There is a lot of excitement about the tramway and the Tatev Revival Project," said Zeitountsian. "We wanted a way to capture and challenge local students' creativity and imagination. After all, the investment and these long-term tourism projects are being done for their future, so that they can find work in their own backyards and stay and enrich the region and their Homeland."

Fundraiser entry donations will contribute to the $50 million fund that will be used to renovate the ancient Tatev Monastery complex, strengthen local business and economies so that the region has the infrastructure to accommodate more tourists to the area.

"Some 20 thousand tourists come to Tatev annually, and we want to see that number jump significantly as we add more bed and breakfasts, hotels, restaurants, and arts and crafts stores in the seven villages surrounding the monastery," said Zeitountsian.
